When measuring emissions from passive vents at landfills, field
teams typically collect a sample over a given time frame in some
type of enclosed device, such as a Tedlar® bag or a SUMMA®-
passivated stainless steel canister.
When measuring emissions from a stack with a high flow rate (e.g.,
the effluent from a landfill gas incinerator), field teams typically
insert a sampling probe directly into the stack. The probe then
draws a known volume of the stack air into another device, such
as those mentioned above. Various analytical methods can be used
depending on the compounds being measured. For example, total NMOC
may be measured at the inlet and outlet of an enclosed combustion
device to show compliance with the NSPS/ EG. EPA Method 25C is
used for this purpose. EPA Method 18, measurement of gaseous organic
compound emissions by gas chromatography, is a method for measuring
individual organic HAPs.
